Being a college girl in her twenties brings about many challenges. When scrolling on social media we see gorgeous fashion trends and clothing items/accessories that we wish we could have. We see all the cool makeup and skincare products and wish our cabinets were full with all of those expensive, gorgeous products with the impeccable packaging. But, we can’t afford all of that since we are “broke college students.” However, I’m here to tell you…. You can have the wardrobe you dream of! (Yes, even as a “broke college student.”) With a little creativity- and some strategy, you can build a chic college wardrobe without spending a fortune.
Keep reading to find out how:
Capsule Wardrobe
Ever heard of the capsule wardrobe trend on social media?? Well- you should pay close attention. Having a capsule wardrobe is the way to go. The term “capsule wardrobe” just means a closet full of basic, high quality, pieces where you can mix and match those pieces to create a ton of outfits, compared to a closet filled with clothes you don’t really wear. Basics are essential! Invest in items such a white shirt, black shirt, jeans, black jeans, classic jewelery, a leather jacket, a jean jacket, blazer, and white sneakers. With just these few pieces, you can create several outfits! Focus on buying more neutral pieces (since these go with most everything) and save the big, bold pieces for later. The basic pieces can be mixed and matched with trendy pieces and accessories to elevate your outfits.
Thrifting
Not only is thrifting a fun and aesthetic activity to do on the weekend with your girls… but in terms of fashion… it can elevate your wardrobe. A lot of the times, you can find really high quality pieces for very cheap, all while sticking to your budget. Sometimes you can find luxury pieces as well! (My greatest thrift find was a $4,000 Prada Purse that I bought for only $50!) If you want only on-brand items consider going to places like Platos Closet. But if you are willing to look around and search for some good items, go to any of your local thrift stores. Goodwill is one of my favorites! Thrift stores and second-hand shops are perfect for stylish finds for the fraction of the price.
Follow Fashion Trends Wisely
Trends come and go… be careful what trends you follow. Make sure whatever you are purchasing is something that you truly like and will continue to wear after the trend disappears. Don’t buy something just because its “trendy.” Incorporate trendy pieces sparingly. For example, add a trendy accessory or statement piece that complements your basics without overhauling your wardrobe.
Quality over Quantity
Focus on quality over quantity. It’s better to have a few well made pieces that last a long time rather than a large collection of inexpensive items that only last you for a year. In terms of finances, yes you may be saving money by purchasing cheaper, less quality items but if you keep having to repurchase those cheap items when you could have just saved and budgeted for one, high quality item you end up spending more in the long run. Also pay attention to fabrics and cuts that will not wear easily to maximize these pieces to their fullest potential!
Plan Your Purchases
For more budgeting tips.. check out our last post: Mastering Your Finances: A College Students Guide to Budgeting. When it comes to building a trendy wardrobe, only buy what you absolutely need! Do you need those hot pink stilettos with the matching purse? Not necessarily… (definitely save for things like that!) but focus on saving and budgeting for high quality basics for your capsule wardrobe first and then you can go purchase those gorgeous heels once you have a solid wardrobe built. Avoid impulse buying by planning your purchases (what, when, and why you are going to buy!) Create a list of what you need and stick to it. When you plan beforehand, you are more likely to make thoughtful decisions and avoid unnecessary expenses.
Consider DIY and Upcycling
Have a bunch of old clothing items that are worn out and out of style? Yet you still can’t part ways with these pieces.. consider upcycling those items. Get crafty and give those old, drab clothes a new life! Whether it’s adding patches to jeans, or cropping a t-shirt, DIY projects can help you update and transform your wardrobe affordably. Plus its a fun way to create individual and unique pieces that reflect your personal style!
Shop Off-Season
Take advantage of end-of season sales to prepare for the next time that season comes around. Purchasing clothing at the end of the season can lead to significant savings. Stock up when the discounts are high so you can prepare for next season in style! (And not in debt 🙂 )
Take Advantage of Student Discounts
Many stores have great student deals and discounts but they won’t advertise it.. always as if they do! Most of the time they have some sort of deal or discount and all you have to do is just prove you are enrolled at a university by showing your school ID or email address. Remember.. If you don’t ask the answer is always no! Signing up for student discount programs or using apps/extensions that offer deals can also help you save money. Do your research and look for coupon codes as well!
