As summer comes to a close, and a new semester is right around the corner, its time to prepare for college life with a well thought-out “back to school” strategy so we can be the most successful, put together students on campus! (For freshman… so you can start out this new journey of your life with everything you need to absolutely slay the semester and be prepared!) It’s time to put down the bikinis and pick up your backpack. Keep reading for the ultimate back to school guide!
Now if you’re anything like me… I love back to school season. Where are all of my “2016 back to school haul” girlies at?! Anyways… there’s just something about starting a new school year with all new supplies, decor, clothes and more. It’s like New Years in the middle of August! It’s a perfect way to reset, get organized, and feel like you have your sheesh together (which ultimately makes you more productive) as the school year begins.
In college Professors don’t give you “school supplies” list like we used to have in elementary school… even though I kind of wish they did. Going into college as a freshman I had no idea what to get! I had a backpack filled with school supplies I didn’t need, and abundance of technology (about the entire Apple Ecosystem) and more. I definitely stuck out like a sore thumb… everyone knew I was a freshman with me walking around campus with my arms full of books and supplies, and my backpack exploding with God knows what. I sat down in my first class, looked around, and everyone had a pen, a sheet of paper, and an iPad or Laptop. That’s it?! Are you serious….
It took me my entire first year of college to find what materials worked for me. I’m very Type A so having no requirements or lists as to what to get caused me to not only go insane… what do you mean I don’t need to bring my 45 pastel highlighters with the skinny tip, folder for every sheet of paper, and 50 glue sticks “just in case.” ?!?! But I also spent way more money than I needed. I’m here to give you a breakdown of everything you actually need to start the semester off right, all while saving money too. (You’re welcome!)
School Supplies:
- ONE Notebook (I know what you’re saying… just one? Yes just one. You may not even need any, but I do recommend getting one, especially if there’s a professor who doesn’t allow any devices in their class)
2. Sharpie S-Gel Pens: The best pens to ever exist! Zero smudges, and write like butter. Perfect for taking notes, making flashcards, doodling in your planner, or writing your assignments down.
3. Mr.Pen Highlighters: I would recommend getting some highlighters for all of the reading you will be doing. Even though most Professors do things digitally, they will usually require physical text books/some sort of printable reading material, and highlighters are the perfect studying tools that also make your books look pretty
4. Post It Notes: I LOVE Post it notes. I stick them everywhere… on my computer, on my mirror, on pages in my textbook, etc. Post its help me to stay organized, take notes, write down reminders, or help me study for an exam.
5. ONE Folder (Yes just one again) Very rarely do you get any paper assignments or quizzes, but some professors are traditional and do it the old fashioned way. I have had some professors that strictly used paper. I would have one folder just to stick any quizzes, handouts, or random papers in there.
6. A Cute Pencil Bag/Case: I’m not talking about the hard plastic elementary vibe pencil case (although you could get one if you want) but I’m talking about a bag small enough to just fit everything you need. Something that isn’t bulky or super heavy. A few of my favorites are linked below!
7. A Backpack or Tote Bag: This is totally a preference thing.. my first year I used a backpack but I switched to a tote bag and I love it! Find what works for you because YOU like it. Not because it’s what everyone else has. I linked some budget friendly options, as well as a few expensive options if you want to splurge and are a bag-addict like myself!
8. A Computer or iPad: I do recommend everyone having a computer (it doesn’t matter what kind, unless your college requires a specific brand) for saving all of your files, big assignments, or using large programs that take up a lot of space on your device. But if you don’t think you need one, or if you want to maximize your productivity… I very highly recommend spending you money on one of the newer iPads that are compatible with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil. (I’m actually using mine right now!) This sleek device is small, compact, filled with storage, and provides you with the basic necessities you need to write emails, take notes, write essays, watch videos, or read/annotate papers, etc. Look at the models and choose the one you like the most and think would be best for YOU. Right now Apple is having a great deal for college students! Check out the link below.
9. A Water Bottle: With walking around a campus all day, you’re going to want to make sure you have your water bottle with you. Make sure it’s good quality, and something that you can fit in your bag! Here are a few of my favs:
10. AirPods/HeadPhones: An absolute necessity. Perfect for listening to podcasts, watching videos, listening to music, etc.
That is all for school supplies… I know. Now onto some Dorm DECOR!!!
All dorms are different depending on the university. Some are big, some are small. Some you have to share, others you don’t. However, when it comes to buying dorm decor remember this is a dorm, not a three story home with five bedrooms. I’m telling you this from experience, I spent SO much money, and I didn’t even use half of the stuff I bought since it didn’t even fit. (I seriously had three car loads filled to the brim.) Regardless of your style, here are things you absolutely NEED for your dorm.
Dorm Decor
1.Mattress Topper: This is one of the main things you need for your dorm. College dorm beds are extremely uncomfortable, as well as unsanitary. Invest in a good mattress topper that is at least more than two inches thick, so you can be comfortable and get the most out of your dorm experience. This one goes hand in hand with the next one…
2. Mattress Cover: The difference between a mattress topper and cover is one of them provides comfort, and the other provides hygiene/sanitation. You cannot just settle for one or the other. These two are necessities that are necessary to ensure you get the best rest possible and completely transform the terrible college dorm mattresses. In addition to the topper and cover— a sheet set, comforter and some pillows are a given necessity! Add your individual style and vibe to your *now* comfortable dorm bed!
3. Bed Risers: Dorm beds are already tall… however, the more space you have underneath, the more storage possible. If your bed is lofted high enough to put a desk or dresser under, I don’t think you need these. But if it’s the typical standard dorm bed, I would highly recommend extending your bed to maximize your storage to the fullest potential.
4. Extra-Long Bed Skirt: This goes hand and hand with the one above. If you extend your bed and use it for storage purposes, you’re going to want to have a bed skirt to cover up the mess of the storage space below!
5. Bed Tray: When it comes to dorm rooms, everything you buy should be functional and provide some sort of storage. Having a bed tray is perfect for when you finally climb into your 3ft+ tall bed, get all comfy and cozy, and then realize you left your water bottle, computer/iPad, phone, and whatever else across the room. You want these things to be easily accessible, and you don’t want to have to fall off your bed to get them (especially first thing in the morning when your alarm goes off.)
6. Reading Pillow: A reading pillow is cute, comfy, and yet again— functional! You can sit up in your bed, read your textbooks, and do your work without getting a back ache! Trust me.. it’s worth the investment.
7. Headboard: Some colleges have restrictions on these, so if there is no restrictions… I would invest in a good quality headboard. Not only does it provide a more aesthetic/homey vibe, it is functional! If you’re going to get a headboard.. get one with a charging port. The two things college dorms usually don’t have is cute furniture, or outlets. It is well worth the investment.
8. Storage Ottoman: Not only will this provide even more storage.. it’s a cute seat or footrest, plus it can also be used to get up onto your ridiculously tall bed! (Where are my short girls at?!)
9. Lamp: Another thing college dorms don’t have is good lighting… purchase a cute lamp that provides warm lighting.. you’ll be glad you did!
10. Desk Organizer & Lamp Combo: Like I mentioned… dorm lighting sucks! So I would highly recommend getting as many forms of warm lighting as possible. It completely transformed the vibe of my room, and my entire mindset. With having a desk organizer and lamp combo like this one, not only can you organize all of your school supplies, books, and more, but it also provides lighting which simultaneously being functional and saving space! This is a game changer.
11. Desk Chair or Cushion: Some colleges have restrictions on furniture, so If you can’t bring your own desk chair, you will most likely end up with an ugly, wooden, EXTREMELY uncomfortable desk chair. Please, please, please, purchase a cushion if that’s the case! You will spend many hours at your desk, and you will want to be as comfortable as possible to maximize your productivity, but also enjoy studying and doing work without being in pain. You’ll thank me later.
12. Foldable Chair: Perfect for additional seating during hang outs or study sessions!
13. Carpet: Again, some universities have restrictions— if carpets are allowed, BUY ONE. Dorm floors are usually concrete, drab, and depressing. A nice fuzzy rug will not only transform your space, but will create a homey and comfortable vibe. Discuss this with your roommate.. try to find a carpet that works for the both of you if it will be taking up the whole space.
14. Space Saving Hangars: If you’re anything like me, I have a TON of clothes. Like I’ve mentioned a million times, dorm rooms have little to no storage and the closets are usually very small. By having space saving hangars, I saved a ton of space (ironic), and It took up only half the space in my little armoire (I didn’t even have a closet my first year) I was able to fit way more than I would have been able to without these.. they are an absolute necessity no matter how many clothes you are bringing with you!
15. Shoe Rack: You’re going to need some sort of storage for your shoes. They take up an odd amount of space, and can easily add clutter to a small space. Having your shoes organized will one, help you stay organized and find what pair you are looking for easier, and two, create more space! I highly recommend the one pictured below that is on wheels and can fit under your bed (or in the closet), it has worked SO well for me, but if that’s not your vibe or in your budget, here are some more that might work better for you: SIDE NOTE: don’t bring 40 pairs of shoes… only bring your favorites/what you actually need.
16. Drawer Organizers: If you have any drawers available to you, maximize their efficiency. By having drawer organizers, not only will they help you stay organized… but they provide more space!
17. Mini Fridge: Some colleges have restrictions, and some have fridges equipped prior, but if these are not applicable, buy a small fridge! Regardless of your meal plan, you’re going to want your own snacks and drinks and not want to go to the dining hall every single time you want to eat. Discuss this with your roommate, maybe one can buy the fridge or the other can buy a rug? Or suggest going in halves on these things! These are the biggest dorm expenses, and if you can work something out with your roommate(s) or suite mates, it will help you to save money while also being on the same page. You don’t want to show up with two fridges for your 10×12 space on move in day.
18. Brita Water Filter: Filtered water is another thing college dorm’s usually don’t have. Having a Brita Water Filter will make sure your water is filtered, safe, and good to drink!
19. Plastic Food Containers/Cooking Supplies: If you have access to a kitchen of some sort, I would highly recommend buying food containers and pots and pans (not a ton, just get the necessities), trust me… no matter how good your dining hall is.. you will get sick of the food. Having the ability to cook your own food is a game changer. I also recommend getting plastic reusable dish ware and silverware. Yes, you have to do dishes… but it reduces waste and they come in handy!
20. Cleaning Supplies: This is a non negotiable. No matter how big or small your dorm is, you should buy some sort of cleaning products, not only will you be sick less, but you’ll be living in a clean space!
21. Small Vaccuum Cleaner: Again, this goes hand in hand with keeping your dorm clean.. buying a small vaccuum cleaner is a game changer! (Just purchase one that works and does the job)
22. Swiffer: Maybe this is just because I’m a clean freak… but get a Swiffer! Keep your floors clean because they get so dirty out of absolutely nowhere. Plus, it’s fun!
23. Broom and Dust Pan: Again, pretty self explanatory. (Maybe Im just overly OCD…)
24. Air Purifier: Essential to keep you healthy… it will improve the air quality and reduce any allergens in your dorm!
25. Command Strips, Hooks, and Shelves: An absolute NECESSITY. No matter what blog post you read, YouTube video you watch, etc. command strips are guaranteed to be on every back-to-college list. These are a game changer for all of your decor needs.
26. Cube Organizer: You can get big or small versions of these… but I think these are very helpful and serve several purposes. I used one of these for a bookshelf/storage but also for my “night stand” since it was the only thing tall enough for my bed! I noticed some people also used these for storage under their bed. Consider purchasing one!
27. Under the Bed Storage: There are several types of storage systems you can implement for your space.. purchase something that works for you to provide you with the storage space you need.. whether that’s plastic totes, reusable bags, or shoving things in drawers.
28. Three Tier Cart: Absolutely no one talks about being a college girl and bringing all of your hair tools, products, and makeup to college. Purchase a three tier cart and use it as your “vanity”…. you’ll thank me later! (Plus you can get cute add-ons for these carts)
29. Shower Shoes: This should be self-explanatory…
30. Plastic Shower Caddy: A shower caddy is a necessity, but I specifically recommend a plastic one. I used both a mesh and plastic one, and I noticed the plastic one made things easier, didn’t mold, and was more functional… just take my word for it!
31. Laundry Bag/Basket: I have used both a bag and a basket, and I don’t prefer one over the other. I highly suggest getting one that fits you and your needs!
32. Fan or Heater: Depending on the climate and restrictions of your university… I would purchase one or both of these. Dorm rooms get stuffy in the heat, and they are freezing when it’s cold… just trust me!
33. First Aid Kit: You may think you won’t need one… but you will! You can get many first aid kits that come with everything you need, or if you want to make your own that works too!
Packing for college can be a daunting task… but with this list, you’ll be well equipped to set up your room for a successful and enjoyable year. Remember, your dorm is your home away from home for a while, so make it as personalized and comfortable as possible!
Some Extra Things to Consider (and More!)
- Blue Light Glasses: you’ll be staring at a screen for long periods of time.. blue light glasses are a game changer! Plus you can get so many cute pairs for cheap
- Fairy Lights or LED Light Strips: Every college student has one of these.. they make your space cool, cozy, and create an ambient atmosphere!
- Power Strip with Surge Protector: You won’t have a lot of outlets available for your needs… so I recommend getting one to ensure you have enough outlets while simultaneously protecting your electronics.
- Board Games/Playing Cards: For those fun Friday night activities when you aren’t out partying!
- External Hard Drive or USB Flash Drive: Perfect for backing up those important files and documents.
- Printer: For printing out any assignments or papers without having to use the library printers.
